University of Montana

The University of Montana is the largest and oldest public university in the state and one of the top options for high school students and any student looking to continue his or her education. It offers a number of certificate programs for students with an interest in public health who do not want to earn a full degree, including certificates in environmental health sciences, epidemiology, global health and public health. Some of the credits that students earn in these programs will transfer to one of its full programs. The University of Montana actually offers two different MPH programs for incoming graduate students based on whether they want to enroll in a general program or one with a concentration.
Master in Public Health (MPH)
One of the two Master’s in Public Health degree programs in Montana that this university offers is a general program called its Master in Public Health program. To get your MPH degree, you need to take 27 credits of required courses and take six credits of electives. The university gives you credit for the practicum you do and the portfolio that you create, too. You also get credit for a final paper that you write. The courses that you take include introduction to epidemiology, fundamentals of biostatistics, public health administration and management, program evaluation and research methods and environmental and rural health.
Masters in Public Health with Community Health and Prevention Sciences Concentration (MPH-CHPS)
Another option for MPH students is this program, which has a concentration in community health and prevention sciences. It focuses more on stopping the spread of infectious diseases than the traditional program does. This is also a hybrid program that features some online courses, which makes it a good option for those who work full-time jobs or have other commitments that keep them out of school. The program includes 42 credits that students can take on their own time. Your courses will include ethical issues in public health, community based research, community health promotion strategies and theories of health behavior and counseling. Students will also do a portfolio, final paper and a practicum in the final year and semester of the program.
