Montclair State University

The College of Education and Human Services

Located in a town of the same name, Montclair State University is a large school with more than 20,000 students and a motto of “Carpe Diem,” or Seize the Day. Rutgers University

School of Public Health

The full name of Rutgers University is Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and the school is a public research university that was chartered before the American Revolution. Originally called Queen’s College in the 1700s, the school would eventually grow to become the largest university in New Jersey with almost 69,000 students. The school introduced graduate-level education in the 1920s and has grown over the years to three campuses located in New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden. The university is considered the flagship of the state’s university system and has 175 different academic departments in which to study at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.

Master of Public Health (MPH) Degree

Rutgers requires that students complete 45 credits with a grade of “B” or better in this masters in public health degree in New Jersey. Core areas of public health take up 15 of those credits, and additional credits fall under the categories of electives and the student’s chosen concentration. Areas in which a student may concentrate include Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Education & Behavioral Science, Health Systems & Policy, Environmental & Occupational Health, and Global Public Health. The program also requires that students complete six credits of fieldwork where the students will complete a final project, written report, and oral presentation. Students may also choose to enroll in a double concentration by completing the requirements for two complete areas of study.

Master of Business Administration / Master of Public Health (MBA/MPH) Dual-Degree

A Master of Public Health degree pairs well with degrees in other disciplines and Rutgers offers a dual degree in Public Health and Business Administration. Students will take business courses alongside the public health courses to prepare for positions in administration within the healthcare. Providing cost-effective healthcare within the public health sector means improving patient care and outcomes. Students interested in this dual degree must apply to each school and will be granted entry into the program. The curriculum requires that students complete 15 credits in public health and 28 credits in business, as well as several electives and departmental classes required for each degree.

Master of Biomedical Science / Master of Public Health (MBS/MPH) Dual-Degree

Through a partnership with the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Newark, Rutgers offers a dual degree in biomedical science and public health. The MBS degree is a non-thesis track earned at the same time as the MPH. Students will learn contemporary research methods and the scientific foundations present in each area. The total number of credits required to complete the degrees is 45 credits of biomedical science and 30 credits of public health. The degree is available to students with a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and to anyone who wishes to advance his or her career in public health.

Master of Public Policy / Master of Public Health (MPP/MPH) Dual-Degree

The MPP/MPH dual-degree option at Rutgers is part of a partnership between the School of Public Health and the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy. Students interested in public health and the work of public policymakers will benefit from this degree combination. Graduates of the program will understand public policy and how it impacts public health topics like epidemiology, biostatistics, health services, and healthcare policy. As with the other dual-degree options at Rutgers, students must apply to and gain acceptance to each program separately before being allowed to seek the dual-degree schedule. The degree also requires that students take electives approved by both departments.

Master of Science in Physician Assistant / Master of Public Health (MSPA/MPH) Dual-Degree

Students interested in becoming physicians assistants will benefit from the interdisciplinary clinical and public health training offered by this dual-degree program. The program takes approximately four years to complete. Students must first apply to the Physician Assistant Program at Rutgers before being allowed to seek the MSPA/MPH degree with a second application to the School of Public Health. Students must take the GRE before gaining acceptance to the program and must maintain grades of B or better to complete the degrees. Classes taken will come from several departments including the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health and the Department of Health Systems & Policy.

Bachelor’s Degree / Master of Public Health (BA/MPH or BS/MPH) Articulated Degree

Undergraduate students with excellent qualifications may be eligible to enter the articulated degree program in Public Health at Rutgers. Students will begin their graduate study while still in undergraduate school, but the program isn’t considered concurrent. Students will first earn their bachelor’s degree and then focus on their MPH. The graduate degree will take somewhere between three to five additional semesters of study beyond the traditional four-years required by the bachelor’s degree. This degree option is given at the New Brunswick campus, and students must receive a recommendation from their advisor or the college dean to gain eligibility to apply.

Bachelor’s Degree / Master of Public Health (BA/MPH) Articulated Degree

Rutgers offers a second option to seek the BA/MPH degree at the Camden location; however, students interested in a Bachelor of Science rather than the Bachelor of Arts will need to attend classes from the New Brunswick location for the BS/MPH articulated degree schedule. Applicants must secure a recommendation from a faculty member or dean that features a statement of the student’s maturity, as well as an explanation of the student’s interests and track record at the school. To earn their MPH beyond the study required for the BA, students must complete 45 credit hours with 15 of those credits in core courses and additional credits in department courses, electives, and fieldwork.

Doctor of Medicine / Master of Public Health (MD/MPH) Dual Degree

Owing to a partnership between the medical school at Rutgers and the School of Public Health, students may seek an MD/MPH dual-degree. Students will benefit from the interdisciplinary training that connects public health and medicine. Medical students may complete both degrees in four or five years. Applications to this dual-degree program are restricted to students who have already been accepted to medical school and have decided to seek a dual-degree with the School of Public Health. After a student’s third year of medical school, he or she will take a full year to focus on public health classes before completing medical school training.

Doctor of Pharmacy / Master of Public Health (PHARMD/MPH) Dual-Degree

Students in the Doctor of Pharmacy program in the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy are eligible to apply for the dual-degree option that adds a Master of Public Health to their studies. The program is centered at the New Brunswick campus, which is where the School of Pharmacy is located. The school recommends that students speak with the program director of the School of Pharmacy to check their eligibility and suitableness for the dual-degree option. Students must apply to the Master of Public Health program during their first year in the pharmacy program and will begin taking public health classes while still seeking their Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

Doctor of Psychology / Master of Public Health (PSYD/MPH) Dual-Degree

Students may complete a doctoral degree and MPH degree at the same time at Rutgers with the PSYD/MPH dual-degree option. The program takes between five to six years and depends on the schedule a student chooses to complete his or her degrees. Students must apply to and gain acceptance to the Doctor of Psychology program before applying to the School of Public Health for entry into the MPH program. The school recommends that interested students speak with the faculty or the dean soon after entering the PsyD program to check on the student’s eligibility for the dual-degree option and to begin the application process.
