The pursuit of a higher education degree is an investment. It costs money, time, and hard work, but it promises the hope of a more advanced and rewarding career at the end. Unfortunately, many students with academic and career dreams lack the financial ability to set out on the journey. For public health students, public health scholarships such as these five could be the helping hand they need.

1. Udall Foundation

Sophomores and juniors are invited to apply for the Udall Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship. This award goes to students showing commitment to leadership and public services in either the areas of Native American communities or the environment. This year, the Udall Foundation hopes to award up to $7000 to each of 50 students. The scholarship namesakes, Stewart and Morris Udall, dedicated their careers to creating self-governance among Native Americans, improving health care, and instituting stewardship of public lands and natural resources.

2. Health Resources & Services Administration

The Health Resources & Services Administration offers several scholarships to students at various levels, as well as loan repayment programs. Their goal is to aid students in pursuing careers delivering healthcare services to areas that need them most. These opportunities are school-based, so it requires a little bit of work on the part of the applicants to find out which scholarships their schools participate in. The website includes convenient links to help with this.

3. Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association

The Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) offers an annual scholarship for undergraduate students who are enrolled in programs leading them towards careers in environmental or occupational health and safety. There is only one winner per year, but all students currently taking courses totaling at least 12 credit units are invited to apply. The reward is $3,000, and also includes attendance at the CSHEMA Annual Conference. This is an excellent opportunity for students to network with professionals and create even more academic and career advancement.

4. National Environmental Health Association/American Academy of Sanitarians

The National Environmental Health Association and the American Academy of Sanitarians team up to offer an annual scholarship. This opportunity is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. The $1000 awards is funded by donators who believe in the importance of assisting students in becoming valuable environmental health professionals, so the number of awards given depends on the amount of donations received.

5. Society for Public Health Education

The Society for Public Health Education offers the annual Vivian Drenckhahn Student Scholarship. Two $1500 awards are available to both undergraduate and graduate students. Eligible applicants must be members of the Society for Public Health Education, have excellent academic standing, go above and beyond coursework to show a commitment to their future career in public health, and have financial need. Application requirements are strict for this award, so it is advisable to start planning early for the annual summer and fall deadlines.

Scholarships such as these five here offer both financial assistance and opportunities for further academic development. All they require is a demonstration of academic excellence and commitment to the public health field. Financial disadvantage no longer has to deter qualified and ambitious students from pursuing their dream careers in public health.
