Master’s in Public Health Degrees in New Mexico

Master’s in Public Health degree programs in New Mexico help students prepare for the challenges that they’ll face when working in today’s healthcare industry. As people continue aging, they’ll continue facing health problems that they need help handling. Those with a degree in public health have the chance to work closely with some of those patients and to work behind the scenes to develop new programs and plans for those patients. The public health industry includes the lobbyists and advocates who look out for the best interests of larger groups too. New Mexico colleges offer a few different worthy programs.

New Mexico State University

Department of Public Health Services

One of the top colleges in the state is New Mexico State University. Also known as New Mexico State and NMSU, it offers degree programs that appeal to incoming students at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. Its Department of Public Health Services is the department that offers both online and traditional programs for public health students. The online option of the program includes the same courses as the on-campus program does, and students will even have access to the same resources and the same teachers. NMSU also makes it easy for students to apply to either program and to enroll.

Master of Public Health

NMSU offers a Master of Public Health degree program that is perfect for adult students who work full time. Those students can enroll in classes that meet on weekends and at night. All evening classes start at five pm or later to accommodate students coming from work. This program has a focus on community health education and teaches students how to educate and work with people in a larger group on a community level. It features 15 credits of core public health classes, 18 credits of community health education courses and at least nine credits earned through fieldwork or a thesis.

Master of Public Health Online

New Mexico State also offers a Master of Public Health degree program that students can complete online. This program is open to New Mexico residents and nonresidents who live in other states. Students can enroll in a community health education version of the program or focus on a path dedicated to health administration, management and policy, which is only available through the online program. Though students must take the same required courses, they can also take other classes relating to this subject, including principles of health program management, health services organization and delivery and evaluative approaches in public health.

University of New Mexico

College of Population Health

The main competitor to New Mexico State University is the University of New Mexico, which is one of the largest public university school systems in the state. Also called UNM, it’s home to the UNM Health Sciences Center. This is a larger center dedicated to the study of health sciences and health services. This center houses the College of Population Health, which offers degree programs designed to help students learn more about populations and groups of people. It offers two of the top Master’s in Public Health degree programs in New Mexico that include a dual degree program in Latin American studies.

Master of Public Health

UNM gives students a full seven years to complete its Master of Public Health program after enrolling. All students must take a comprehensive exam at the end of their studies. They also have the option of doing a thesis, taking an experience course or writing a professional paper. The university requires that all students do an internship or fieldwork experience, but the experience course goes beyond what they learn in the field. This program also allows students to select a concentration in epidemiology, community health or health systems service and policy and take courses relating to that concentration in addition to required classes.

Master of Public Health/Master of Arts in Latin American Studies and Public Health

The university also offers a Master of Public Health/Master of Arts in Latin American Studies and Public Health, which is a dual degree program that allows students to combine elements of both programs. This trains students to work with those from Latin American countries and teaches them how to identify the specific needs of those populations. One unique feature of this program is that it encourages students to take courses in anthropology and to learn more about those cultures. Students can take an integrative experience course instead of doing a thesis or professional paper to learn more about a current health topic.
