Students who already have an undergrad degree can enroll in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program available through Northeast Ohio Medical University. This is a consortium program maintained by several different schools, including the University of Akron and Ohio University. Those schools work together to provide students with a strong background in public health.
Designed for those who do not have time to enroll in traditional degree programs, it features six core courses that students can complete online. Those online courses allow students to use webcams to chat with their professors and to sit in on lectures that occur at specific times of the day. The program also features classes that meet on weekends. Students will spend a few hours on one of the campuses every Saturday. Weekend classes can accommodate the busy schedules of working students.
All public health majors must take the six core classes and then take three generalist courses and some electives. Public Health Concepts, Environmental Health Sciences in Public Health and Epidemiology in Public Health are a few examples of the core classes in this program. Public Health Research and Evaluation is one of the generalist courses that students take. This course helps them improve their research skills before they take a capstone class. Northeast Ohio Medical University requires that all MPH students take a final class and do a project in that class, but it also expects students to do a practicum too.
About Northeast Ohio Medical University
Northeast Ohio Medical University is a small university in Ohio that offers programs in medical subjects. Founded in 1973, it opened after the state launched a study that looked at how a medical school would benefit the region. The study also looked at how local hospitals could work together to train students. The state picked the small town of Rootstown because it was close to major cities such as Cleveland. This small town allows students to focus on their work without any of the distractions found in a big city too. The school changed its name to Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2011 and now goes by the abbreviation of NEOMED.
The university’s campus features its own Education and Wellness Center that is home to a coffee shop and a fitness center. Students who are also parents can use the daycare facilities available here and have someone watch their children while they’re in class. A large number of the students enrolled in the university have full-time jobs and other commitments. The university also launched its own STEM program for younger students. This program functions as both a charter school and a high school and prepares students for studying medical subjects at the graduate level. NEOMED has an enrollment of fewer than 2,000 students across all its programs.
Northeast Ohio Medical University Accreditation Details
NEOMED has accreditation for most of its medical programs. The university’s main form of accreditation comes from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS), which allows it to accept transfer credits from students who studied at another campus. This is also a form of regional accreditation, which means that incoming and current students can apply for financial aid. The Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accredited the NEOMED public health program too.
Northeast Ohio Medical University Application Requirements
Students can visit the NEOMED website to see if they can submit applications to the MPH program. The university has a deadline of July 31 for fall applications and a deadline of May 1 for summer applications. Students can only start the MPH program in the summer or fall. Incoming students must have an undergrad grade point average of at least 2.75 or a grad school GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The university recommends that students create an online account. They can use their passwords and usernames later to see if they completed all steps in the application process and if they need to provide the university will any more information. Students will pay the $45 application fee with either an electronic check or a credit card. They will also submit an official transcript and an official GRE score.
NEOMED also asks for a cover letter that is no longer than two pages. This cover letter should act as a statement of purpose and a goals essay. The university asks students to write about their interest in public health and any experiences they have in the field. They can also use this letter to talk about any courses they took relating to public health. Students will also send three letters of recommendation to the university. NEOMED requires that some students fill out a financial worksheet that shows how they plan on paying for their courses and other expenses.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The MPH program that NEOMED offers is a graduate program. Students will pay the university’s graduate school tuition rate. The tuition for other programs is slightly higher. Students pay $7,272 per year as an Ohio resident. They can take 12 credits of classes during the two main semesters for this rate. Nonresidents pay $7,416 per year. NEOMED estimates that students will pay more than $26,000 a year when they factor in all their other costs. This amount includes their loan fees and university fees. The university estimates that students will pay more than $10,000 a year for room and board too.
Prior to enrolling in NEOMED, students can submit the FAFSA. This government form becomes available at the beginning of October every year. The only way that graduate students can get government financial aid is via this form. Students typically borrow around $20,000 a year in unsubsidized student loans. They also have the option of applying for other types of loans, including alternative or private student loans the PLUS loans that the government only gives to grad students.
Students can also apply for NEOMED scholarships. The university offers scholarships for military students and those majoring in specific topics. There are also both merit and need scholarships available. Merit scholarships only go to students with a high undergrad GPA and those who scored highly on entrance exams. Students who cannot afford their tuition costs can apply for a need scholarship too. Northeast Ohio Medical University recommends that students apply for scholarships when they submit their applications to the MPH program.
