Studying Public Health at The University of Florida
The University of Florida appears in the Top 10 MPH Programs with No Out-of-State Tuition Fees.
The MPH at the University of Florida is available in an online format that requires 48-credit hours. Students follow the same curriculum that students who attend traditional classes must complete. Lectures are prerecorded and available to watch at the student’s convenience. In addition to courses, students must complete a Seminar in Contemporary Public Health Issues, complete an internship and maintain a 3.0 grade point average with a “C” or better in all courses. Students must also develop and present a paper based in Public Health. Courses required may include:
- Environmental Health Concepts in Public Health
- Introduction to the U.S. Health Care System
- Principles of Epidemiology in Public Health
- Psychological, Behavioral and Social Issues in Public Health
- Statistical Methods for Health Science
- US Healthcare System
Students may choose from the Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Public Health Practice or Social and Behavioral Sciences concentration. Students who choose the Environmental Health concentration must also complete:
- Introduction to Foodborne Diseases
- Public Health Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response
- Soils, Water and Public Health
- Zoonotic Diseases in Humans and Animals
Students who wish to complete the Epidemiology concentration must complete the core courses as well as:
- Epidemiology of Biology of HIV/AIDS
- Epidemiology of Chronic Disease
- Epidemiology of Infectious Disease
- Fundamentals of Public Health Nutrition
In addition to the core courses, students who wish to complete the Public Health Managemetn and Policy program must also complete Evidence-based Management of Public Health and an Introduction to Management of Health Service Organizations. Those who wish to complete the Social and Behavioral Sciences concentration must also complete:
- Community Assessment and Partnerships
- Ecology of HIV/AIDS
- Global Health Disparities and Disabilities
- Health, Risk and Crisis Communication in Public Health
- Public Health Program Planning and Evaluation
Students in all concentrations must complete a Public Health Internship.

The University of Florida began in 1858 when James Henry Roper, a teacher from North Carolina, opened the Gainesville Academy. Roper offered his school and the land to the state in 1866 so that the state would relocate the East Florida Seminary to Gainesville. University of Florida Accreditation Details
The University of Florida is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Accreditation indicates that the school undergoes periodic review to confirm that the programs offered meet or exceed criteria established by the Commission. The school also agrees to correct any areas that are identified as needing improvement and that the school has the resources available to meet their goals and objectives. Programs at the University are also accredited by industry-specific accrediting agencies.
University of Florida Application Requirements
Freshmen, students who have not earned college credit after graduating from high school must complete the Coalition Application. The freshman application opens in August each year and the deadline to apply is November 15. Students must provide the required Student Self-Reported Academic Record. Students must provide official SAT or ACT scores as well.
Transfer students, those who have earned college credit after graduating from high school, must complete an application and all transfer credits must be evaluated to determine whether they are eligible for transfer. Students must provide transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
Graduate students must complete an online application and must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. Students must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended as well as official GRE scores.
The University of Florida Tuition and Financial Aid
Full-time undergraduate tuition at the University of Florida is $6,380 per year. Full-time graduate tuition is $12,740 per year. Online tuition is $3,876 per semester.
Financial aid is available in the form of grants and scholarships along with federal work-study programs. Grants and scholarships are gift aid and do not need to be repaid. Work-study provides students with jobs that help offset the cost of tuition. Students may also qualify for federal, PLUS and private student loans. It is important for students to understand that loans must be repaid upon graduation. Students in graduate programs may also qualify for graduate fellowships or teacher assistant positions that can offset the cost of tuition.
In order to qualify for any financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA must be renewed each year. Even students who feel they will not qualify for financial assistance should complete the FAFSA. Not all aid is based on financial need, but award cannot be awarded unless the student has completed the FAFSA. Students must be a U.S citizen or eligible alien, be enrolled at least half-time in a degree program and make satisfactory academic progress. Male students must register with the Selective Service Administration and the student may not be in default on any federal or institutional loan. They also may not owe a repayment on a financial aid award.
